New York, Susquehanna & Western F45s and SD45s

The purpose of this site is to chronicle the history through photographs of SD45 and F45 locomotives once owned by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway.    Of the sixteen total units, all were ex Burlington Northern except for one ex Norfolk & Western engine which was purchased for parts.   Purchased in 1986/1987 for service on the railroad's burgeoning intermodal service, the engines have lead a checkered career.  They have seen service on everything from container trains to locals, maintenance of way trains to passenger specials.  They have even roamed far beyond the NYS&W system; seeing service on the Delaware & Hudson Railway and the Toledo, Peoria, and Western.

With the acquisition of newer power, all but five were sold to the Montana Rail Link; all the units sold have now been scrapped except for the former 6370/3638.

The rest continued in and out of service.  3636, the last F45, suffered a mechanical failure in the 1990s.  The early 2000s saw the 3612 and 3614 salvaged for parts.  3618 and 3634 went in and out of storage.  In a move that surprised many, the 3636, was returned to service in early 2006 after almost ten years of in activity.  This engine became the last operable F45 in revenue freight service, ever.   Fate caught up with her again in May 2008 and the engine was retired for good.  As of Fall 2014, what remained of 3636 was scrapped, but the 3618 and 3634 may return to active service.
