New York, Susquehanna & Western F45s and SD45s |
|
The purpose of this site is to chronicle the history through photographs of former Burlington Northern F45s and SD45s after they were sold to the New York Susquehanna & Western Railway in 1986/1987. These units were used in all kinds of service on the NYS&W including intermodal, locals, work, and passenger trains. In the late 1980s the railroad purchased new GE locomotives which resulted in many of the '45s being stored. All but five were later sold to Livingston Rebuild Center / Montana Rail Link, which brought them back to "home" rails, the remainder were later re-activated. It appeared that the 20 cylinder era on the NYS&W had ended in early 2003 when the last two units (3618, 3634) were removed from service. More then a year later, the 3618 and 3634 returned to service. In a move that surprised many, even the lone F45, 3636, was returned to service in January 2006.
2008 status: NYS&W 3618, 3634, 3636 in service on the NYS&W. Most of the units sold to the MRL have been scrapped, the status of the rest of the MRL fleet is known.
Selected pre-NYSW era shots.
