New York, Susquehanna & Western F45s and SD45s

The purpose of this site is to chronicle the history through photographs of SD45 and F45 models once owned by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway.    Of the sixteen total units, all were ex Burlington Northern except for one ex Norfolk & Western engine purchased for parts.   Purchased in 1986/1987 for service on the railroad's burgeoning intermodal service, the engines have lead a checkered career.  They have seen service on locals, general freight, maintenance of way trains; even on passenger specials.  They have even roamed far beyond the NYS&W system when parent company Delaware Otsego Corp. ran the Delaware & Hudson Railway or later on the Toledo, Peoria, and Western.

All were later sold to the Livingston Rebuild Center / Montana Rail Link except for 3612, 3614, 3618, 3634, and 3636.  With the exception of the former 6370/3638 all of the units sold to MRL have been scrapped.

It appeared that the 45 era on the NYS&W had ended for good in early 2003 when the last two units (3618, 3634) were stored.  More than a year later,  the 3618 and 3634 returned to service.  3636, idled since the late 1990s, was even returned to service in January 2006 in a move that surprised many.  The last operable F45 east of the Mississippi, fate caught up with her again in May 2008 and she is again out of service, her future unknown.  3636 may indeed hold the title to be the last F45 in revenue service, ever
